A Staple Of The Slasher Genre
In 1978, the first entry in the Halloween film franchise was released. Directed by John Carpenter, the horror movie focuses on Michael Myers (Nick Castle), an escaped patient from Smith’s Grove Sanitarium. When he was a six-year-old boy, Myers murdered his teenage sister, Judith, on Halloween night, and he returns to Haddonfield, the town where he once lived, to sow terror upon the locals. He first sets his sights on the unsuspecting high-school student Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis), whose father is attempting to sell the vacant Myers household. She becomes aware that Myers is following her, but her friends — Lynda Van Der Klock (P.J. Soles) and Annie Brackett (Nancy Kyes) — insist that there’s nothing to worry about. Their naivety proves fatal, as the stalker, wearing a mechanic’s coveralls and an expressionless mask, hunts them down sequentially.
Following the successful release of the first movie, the franchise spawned several sequels, all of which expand upon the background of Myers. The eleventh instalment disavowed the continuity of the previous sequels, acting as a direct successor to the original film. It takes place 40 years after the events of Myer’s return to Haddonfield and revolves around his violent reunion with Laurie, who suffers from crippling post-traumatic stress. To compensate for her fear, Laurie has turned her home into a nigh-impenetrable fortress, but Myers isn’t so easily repelled.
